When Henrik Ibsen published A Doll’s House, in 1979 (an amazing drama and then a winning novel), in Copenaghen, people did not talk about anything else, so that the Danish citizens were constrained to take remedial action. For example, in the wedding invitations or other kinds of cultural event, there was often this postil: “please, do not speak about A Doll’s House…” Ibsen wrote A Doll’s House in Amalfi, and maybe that wonderful coast had a considerable influence on the creation and definition of the characters of a so much vibrant drama. It is about rebellion, betrayals and supposed treachery. So, why do we bring up the great Danish writer in this brief foreword Because the theme of betrayal is pertinent here. No doubt that there is a strong competition between the fans of the Sorrento coast and those of the Amalfi coast, which only those inattentive can see as something indistinguishable. We who are writing have our roots in the Sorrento coast, and for several reasons, above all affective, we are for the first one, but how could not we recognise the extraordinary beauty of the other coast, which is for many aspects even superior to the first one It often happens, then, in summer, when we have the privilege to pass some months in Massa Lubrense, we take some days from our beloved coast and go to Positano or Amalfi or Ravello (for the fantastic concert at dawn, in the magic night of San Lorenzo). It is in this occasion that we feel similar to a lover that betrays his/her partner because, as it happens before a lemon sweet or a ricotta cheese and a pear cake, you are not able to choose and end up taking both… From a geological perspective, the Amalfi coast, is wilder and harsher than the other one, probably because of its proximity to the Calabrian territory, which in part recalls its characteristics. Here, the food too is radically different from the traditional dishes such as caprese ravioli or Sorrento cannelloni, and it differs for its use of spices. Different is also the character of the inhabitants, from a perspective that aims at being intelligent and not demagogic. In short, the two coasts are totally different, but it would be rather stupid to try and make a ranking with a first and a second place, as well as it would be foolish to affirm, for example, that a cup of strawberries is better that a lemon granita: they are totally different, each with specific and primary features, which cannot be considered as absolute elements for making a ranking. The Amalfi coast is wonderful. The Sorrento coast is wonderful. This is it. (Continues).
